Thionville – France

Last weekend the launch phases of the fourth project sequence were held in Thionville (France).
On this project we have developed on behalf of BIT S.p.A. the Detailed Design of the metal decks and the Detailed Design of the lifting and launching equipment.
The work of art, intended to implement the ring road intended for public transport towards the Thionville railway station, consists of two statically independent metal decks which develop from the C1 abutment to the P2 pier (curved section on the railway station side, assembled with lifting from below, spans….) and from pier P2 to abutment C7 (straight section on the side opposite the railway station, assembled with point launch from abutment C7, spans….).
Both decks are made with four core metal caissons

The transport of the toroidal magnets

The featured photo in this post depicts one of the toroidal magnets that will ensure the confinement of the nuclear plasma inside the Tokamak reactor, the first nuclear fusion experiment within the international project called ITER.

A few years ago, precisely in 2017, we designed the transport structure for the magnets produced in Italy by ASG Superconductor on behalf of OMBA Engineering e Impianti; the magnets, once completed and tested inside the La Spezia plant, had to be transported by road to the port, to then be lifted and transported by ship to Marghera for the subsequent transformation operations before being installed in the heart of the Tokamak reactor in the plant ITER of Cadarache (France). For the multimodal transport of 10 toroidal magnets, Steel Project has designed a special metal support structure, which can be completely disassembled and reused, which could guarantee the high stiffness against deformation required by the transport specifications to guarantee the integrity of the superconducting properties of the toroidal coil.
The project went ahead and the progress has been shown in these days on the LinkedIn channel of “ITER Organization”, with several photos and a video which can be referred to here:

“Parchi Materie Prime”

Our works at CTA 2022

After the presentation at the CTA 2022, we illustrate our work regarding the “Acciaierie di Taranto” plant in which, on behalf of Fincantieri Infrastructure, we took care of the assembly project of the “Parchi Materie Prime” roof.

Due to the timing of implementation and the complexity of the assembly methodologies, this assignment represented a great challenge for our work team.

The safe confinement steel structure for the OMO (raw materials) park located inside the “Acciaierie d’Italia” factory in Taranto has plan dimensions of 110 x 385m and is made up of 63 trussed arches, spaced by 6.20 m and with a maximum height of approximately 42m. Because of the erection phases, the structure was divided into 9 macro-modules, each consisting of 7 arches. Once the central segments of each macro-module are assembled, they are raised by means of 4 strand jacks connected to a horizontal truss beam which can slide between vertical guides placed on the lifting towers. Once the assembly of a single macro-module was completed, it was placed on trolleys and then pushed towards its final position by means of a couple of strand jacks.

This project, together with our other works that we will show you in the coming weeks, was selected to participate in the best design award at CTA 2022, which took place from 29 September to 1st October in Francavilla al Mare (Chieti).

Some videos relating to the assembly can be viewed on ours YouTube channel, at this link: (video – by kind permission of Fincantieri Infrastrutcure + Time Lapse by kind permission of SEMAT S.p.a.)

Below is the poster with which we participated in the Best Design Award competition at the CTA, and some photos showing the various stages of assembly.

Today we want to show you another of our works presented on the occasion of the CTA 2022: we will illustrate the assembly project for the reconstruction of a bridge in Tuscany, precisely in Albiano Magra.

The bridge over the river Magra at Km 10 + 422, needed to be rebuilt after the collapse of the existing bridge. It is made with a girder deck in a mixed steel-concrete system and with a static scheme of continuous beam on 4 spans 57.00 + 2 x 90.00 + 54.00 m, for a total length of 291 m.

The metal structure was divided into four macro-segments, entirely assembled at the construction site on the river bank by welding the elementary segments. Each of them was then hoisted up on provisional support and transported to their final location by SPTM, after being positioned at height on provisional supports that were also transported. The assembly project consisted in checking the girders in each phase and in studying of the various proceedings needed to align the four segments before execution of welded joints.

Also this project, like the one illustrated in the previous news, competed for the Best Design Award at the CTA 2022, which took place from 29 September to 1 October in Francavilla al Mare (Chieti).
Below we report the poster with which we participated in the aforementioned competition, and some images of the work in various stages of assembly.

An upgrade for the Steel Project workforce

Steel Project Engineering expands and strengthens its staff in the Design Area with two new entries, the recent engineering graduates Fabio Rosini and Marco Bonuccelli.

Fabio had already been followed by us and by prof. Paolo Sebastiano Valvo for his thesis project, and we are delighted that, once the thesis is finished, he has decided to embark on his new career path with us.

After the introduction of these two new engineers, which took place a few days ago, the support of the more experienced engineers immediately began.

A very important strengthening of the workforce for our studio, which is constantly looking for young engineers interested in interfacing with ever-changing and stimulating projects.

We just have to give Fabio and Marco a big welcome to the Steel Project Engineering team!!!

And our staff continues to grow

A few days ago we told you about two new resources in the planning area (click here to review the news), but between November and December the Steel Project has grown further.
In fact, the recent engineering graduate Filippo Alinari was added to the planning area, welcome Filippo!!!

A special welcome also goes to Valentino, the son of Eng. Leonardo Balocchi, born right at the beginning of December.
Congratulations to the new parents Leonardo and Fanny!

After this good news, and reminding you that the office will close for the holidays from 2 to 6 January 2023, all we have to do is wish you a very merry Christmas and happy holidays.

The Steel Project Engineering team

A new year ends

The year 2022 ends with many goals achieved, and we want to quickly retrace them with you.

Just in the first months of 2022 we affiliated with OICE, the association of engineering and architecture and technical-economic consultancy organizations (https://www.steelproject.it/en/new-affiliation/), subsequently we qualified in the electronic market of the public administration (acquistinretepa.it portal).

We then began the qualification procedure for the RFI portal, and we participated in national and international conferences, also receiving an important award at the Best Design Award, on the occasion of the college of steel technicians, CTA 2022 edition.

It is also important to underline the recent acquisition of 2 NEW CERTIFICATIONS:
environmental certification, according to the UNI EN ISO14001 standard, and health and safety certification in the workplace, according to the UNI EN ISO45001 standard. These certifications were issued to us in December 2022, following the audits carried out in November 2022 by the certifying body BUREAU VERITAS.

Training for our staff, not only the purely technical one, has been one of the priorities of this 2022:
refresher courses on safety in the workplace have been launched for all employees and collaborators, and additional fire prevention courses have been held and first aid.

Attention to the environment is another important aspect that we want to promote, and this is why it is taken into consideration in our strategic objectives set for the year 2023!!!

The new certificates received are shown below, as well as the 2022/2023 integrated quality-safety-environment system policy, updated following the last management review, held in November 2022.

Here is the last work selected for the Best Design Award competition, on the occasion of the CTA 2022 which, with our great satisfaction, won the first prize.

A project that we had already taken beyond the borders of Italy in September, when Eng. Costa illustrated in Istanbul, as part of the tenth International Symposium on steel bridges organized by TUCSA and ECCS, the design of the new arch bridge over the Adige river.

Here are some details on the bridge in question:
The road and cycle-pedestrian bridge over the river Adige in Egna is a steel bowstring arch bridge with a single span of 81.4 m. The deck has a multi-cellular box section with an upper deck made of an orthotropic plate. It’s supported by a single inclined arch with trapezoidal section placed in an eccentric position with respect to the cross section; the hangers are made up of I-section profiles with variable height as well as the cantilevers arranged at a spacing of 3.3m to support the cycle and pedestrian path which are external to the cross section of the deck.
The deck will be launched on temporary supports consisting of roller bearings on abutments and a trolley on launching yard. To reduce the cantilevered span, a lattice prop on arrival abutment and a 36m-launching nose are provided; a rear nose will be used for the final launching phases.
The assembly of the work has been completed and the finishing works are nearing completion, the load tests for the static testing of the work will be carried out in December, in anticipation of the opening to the public.
Thanks again to all the CTA organization for the prize awarded to us, we take the opportunity to show you the poster of the winning project, and some photos taken during the days at the CTA (29 September – 1 October 2022 – Francavilla al Mare)

Overpass A22

Today we inform you that on the Strade e Autostrade website there is talk of the launch of the overpass on the A22, in Egna.
A launch which, to avoid excessive obstructions to the road system, was carried out at night, and in a record time of around 3 hours.
To read the article and learn more about this last phase, here is the link: https://www.stradeeautostrade.it/ponti-e-viadotti/un-ponte-sopra-ladige/
Steel Project Engineering took care of the executive project and the assembly of the metal decks of this overpass.

Here is the project in brief:
The overpass on the A22 motorway at Egna is composed by a single span of 46 m with a bowstring arch with eliminated thrust supporting a 6.5m-wide carriageway, pedestrian walkway and cycle path.
It consists of a straight steel deck with an orthotropic plate, supported by a single arch, also in steel, inclined at 20° from the vertical and located laterally, in an eccentric position with respect to the longitudinal axis. The arch has an irregular pentagonal box and a jib of 7.5 m from the deck. The arch-bridge connection is made by means of welded double T-shaped hangers with variable section.
The deck consists of a multi-cellular caisson with 4 cores with a maximum height of 1.4 m with 3.3m pitch diaphragms. The cycle path and the pedestrian walkway, with a usable width of 2.8 m and 2.5 m, are supported by double T brackets with variable height, according to the pitch of the diaphragms.
